Judaic Studies
The Jewish Studies curriculum includes Hebrew language arts, text study in Torah, Navi, mishnah and gemarra, tefilla (prayer), Israel studies, Jewish ethics and values, and diverse Jewish traditions. We have emphasized both the analysis of ideas in texts and providing experiences which illuminate how these ideas affect our lives.
Tefilla
Tefilla occurs each day. In the youngest grades, children learn to read and understand the basic prayers recited each morning. As they grow, they learn to lead prayer, often with music enhancing the tefilla program. Our curriculum in the second through seventh grades includes classroom study of the concepts underlying the prayers and how we might relate to them, and we also offer an elective trope troupe in the fifth grade to introduce students to Torah cantillations. Middle school (grade 6 through
divides into groups with differing approaches to prayer, and children move into the prayer groups in which they are most comfortable.
Hebrew
Our Hebrew language courses are primarily taught ivrit b’ivrit (Hebrew in Hebrew), and the Hebrew language arts curriculum formally teaches language skills through vocabulary, spoken Hebrew, decoding, reading comprehension, and writing. This approach helps students develop a positive attitude towards Hebrew as a modern language. Language acquisition is reinforced through discussions in Hebrew as well as through music and art: our students read Hebrew stories in class, create Hebrew newspapers and write their own Hebrew stories, and act in Hebrew-language plays.
Text Studies, (Torah, Navi, mishna, and gemarra)
Our youngest students study parashat hashavua, the weekly Torah portion. Through storytelling, drama, art, and discussion, the children learn the parasha and explore the many values we learn from the Torah. The study of Torah text begins in second grade, and the excitement of text study continues as students move up the grades and learn to read, analyze, and understand Biblical Hebrew, rabbinic texts, and the writings of Rashi and other commentators. Higher cognitive learning develops from this text analysis and makes the content meaningful to the contemporary world.
Extra Classroom Experiences
We recognize that students need to grow in many dimensions and we provide opportunities for their personal growth. Lower school (kindergarten through fifth grades) offers a student council, after-school fun classes, and a gifted program. Middle school (sixth through eighth grades) provides a student council, a basketball team, a service program, a faculty advisory program, tzedakka challenges, and other areas to explore.
